Hiking trips for the whole family

In Bø there are plenty of hiking routes that are very suitable for family excursions.

The hike to Trolldalen/Nøkkebua at Gimstad is an accessible and enjoyable family outing. It is also doable by bicycle and a bike trailer for the kids.

Fjærvollfjellet, nearby, offers a splendid vista out across the sea towards Gaukværøy, and is suitable for children who are accustomed to a little hiking.

Sinahula, the cave at Eidet where fairy tale writer Regine Normann hid her manuscripts, is also a pleasant trip with a little added excitement and an extra challenge.

The most beautiful coastal cabin The Guvåg Cabin is not only easily accessible, but also idyllically located on the seashore, and it is equipped with a boat, canoe and sauna, all for hire.

Otherwise, you can visit Blommenholm island. Follow the trail along Lake Gåsland until you come to the curious little suspension bridge that leads you across to the island, where you will find a fireplace and a lean-to shelter.

Find more hiking destinations on at TellTur or ut.no. The tourist information at Sortland can also provide suggested hiking routes that suit your needs and desires.

Uværshula (The Storm Shelter)

You find the start for your hike to the exciting Uværshula on the exit road at Øksa in Mårsund i Bø.  With gales and crashing waves, this is a lively place to visit.  It takes only a few minutes to walk to the storm shelter from the exit road, and comfortably inside the shelter, you can light a fire in the stove and scan the sea across to Hadsel island and the Lofoten mountains. On the exit road, you will also find a sign with information about Regine Normann during the years she spent at Mårsund.

Farm Visits and Horseback Riding

A farm visit is like an amusement park for children, where they can run around in all directions, and enjoy seeing and feeding the many farm animals. In Bø there are several such farms that are open to the public during the Regine Days in the end of July.

Fairytale Forest and Elf Mountain at Bø Museum

Crawl into the fairytale forest and listen to fairy tales written by Bø’s fairy tale writer – Regine Normann. Or pay a visit to the «Alveberget» (Elf Mountain) at  Bø museum. The museum is located in beautiful natural surroundings at Vinjesjøen, where you can explore the exhibits and visit the Artscape Nordland Outdoor Gallery and the «Man from the Sea» sculpture.  This is an excellent area for recreation and play.

The Man from the Sea

The sculpture is interesting to look at and touch, for children and adults alike. The sculpture is without a doubt Bø municipality’s most popular figure.  The surrounding area is a good playground and area to run about in. Read more about the Man from the Sea here

Play on the shoreline

Bø has many wonderful sandy beaches. The one that children find the most exciting to explore is the gently sloping shoreline of Nordahl beach at Vinje. The shallow water heats up quickly in the summer sun, and children have fun chasing crabs and wading far into the water along a gorgeous landscape.  The beaches towards Nykvåg and Hovden are also well worth a visit, with the added excitement of the open ocean.  Read more about the beaches in Bø here.

Reginedagan (Regine Days)

The annual Regine Days festival is arranged during the last week of July. The festival has much to offer families – the fairytale trail, visits to working farms and guided tours to Sinahula, including fairy tales read aloud to the children.  See updates here
