Vesterålen comprises six municipalities distributed among four large islands: Andøya, Langøya, Hadseløya, Austvågøya and Norway's largest island – Hinnøya. The combined surface area is 3100 km2. The distance between the northernmost point at Andenes to the southernmost at Melbu, on the threshold to Lofoten, is 150 km.
