Øksnes Vestbygd - a kayaking paradise
Øksnes Vestbygd is a known area for paddling, not only for the local paddlers from Vesterålen. Paddlers from all over the world have visited the area, and experienced the idyllic archipelago and fascinating sea landscape.
Øksnes Vestbygd - an array of islands with inlets sheltered from the ocean. Perfect for paddlers. Wonderful white sandy beaches, ideal for lunch and overnight stopovers. Puffins, seals, eagles and, if you are lucky, small whales can be seen here. There's an express boat between some of the main islands if the weather should be such that you need alternative transport!
On the outside of Øksnes and Vesterålen the inexperienced paddler must excercise caution when considering 'good weather' paddling on a calm open sea. The many underwater rocks and reefs, the strong currents and the backwash from the shore can give rippling waves which can become a little unpleasant when the wind suddenly begins to blow.
When the sea is calm, you can enjoy a wonderful day on the water but if you are new to the area, we recommend you talk to some of the locals as they are familiar with the local winds and weather conditions and, not at least, the best places for paddling.
The fishing village Skipnes, has been the base of Arctic Sea Kayak Race since 1996 (first arranged in 1991). This is an anual paddle festival that take place the last whole week of July.
NOTE: Even if you are out paddling in the middle of summer, the days can be cold and the water temperature is much colder than further south in Norway. We recommend, therefore, that you bring lots of clothes to keep you warm and dry! If you are going out on a trip and are not familiar with the area, ask at the touris infomation or someone who knows the recommended local routes. Always check the weather forcast before going paddling!
