13/10/2014After many years of depending solely on ferries and expressboats to bring both people and cargo out to the islands in Vesterålen, the archipelago was finally connected together by bridges during the 1970s. Despite being fully connected to the mainland by roads and bridges there are still plenty of ferries that can make your journey easier and faster, and sometimes even more scenic.  For ferry or expressboat schedules just press the link down below and another window with the schedule will open.

06/10/2014'The world's most beautiful voyage' - up and down the Norwegian coastline - originated in Vesterålen. Stokmarknes is birthplace of "Hurtigruta" (the costal route). You can learn all about this beautiful voyage and its history at the Hurtigrute Museum in Stokmarknes.

When travelling from overseas there is most often  a brief  stopover at the national airport Oslo Gardemoen (OSL) before a transfer flight  brings you to Northern Norway.  There area several daily departures from Oslo up north.
