By bike through fem fiskevær
At your own pace, you choose suitable stages for the cycle tour. Stop along the way for a picnic or at the nearest cafe or restaurant for a taste of Vesterålen.
Meet the locals
The "Five Fiskevær" are Myre, Nyksund, Stø, Skipnes and Tinden in Øksnes municipality.
On your bike you get close to the local people, nature, the sea and wildlife.
The cycling trail are mostly on low-traffic roads and easy to ride.
With Myre as the starting point for the trip in Fem Fiskevær, the sections Myre - Stø and Myre - Nyksund are cycle trails. Myre has several offers for shopping and groceries, here you can fill your cycle bags before you set off.
Myre to Nyksund
From Myre to Nyksund it is 13 kilometers. Follow FV7668 until you reach the crossroads signposted Nyksund and onto FV7672. The first part of the trip along Nyksundveien is in slightly hilly terrain over Høydalen, the highest point is just over 50 masl.
In Høydalsvika there is no more paved road, the last 7 kilometers go along a narrow gravel road that winds between sea and high mountains, also here in slightly hilly terrain where the highest point is just over 40 meters above sea level.
The road itself is an experience and often photographed. At the end of the road, the fishing village of Nyksund is like a hidden gem.
Nyksund to Stø
From Nyksund, you can choose to cycle back approx. 10 km and on to Stø, or take local boat transport to Stø. This is private transport that you book in advance because there is limited space for bicycles and luggage.
If you choose to cycle from Nyksund to Stø, the route is 28 km and there are many nature- and cultural experiences along the way.
On the trip you have the opportunity for several small detours.
E.g. Gisløya with a bustling bird life. Here you will find several beaches and a large beach hut that is available to everyone. Here you can light the grill and take a break under a roof.
You can also follow a popular hiking trail to the lighthouse on Gisløyskaga with fantastic views of Andøya and the ocean.
Continue towards Stø, a jetty takes you across the Strengelvågfjord. Halfway across the jetty, you can choose to follow a small section of Gammelveien - (the old road), if you want to try some trail biking.
Just before you reach Stø, you can turn onto a gravel road (Staggarsveien) and cycle in a loop past the historic Langenes church. This is the oldest preserved church in Vesterålen. From Langenes it is barely 2 kilometers until you are in Stø and at the end of the road. Here you will find boat transport if you want to go by sea to Nyksund.
If the weather permits, we really recommend the low and short hike to Skipssanden (beach), part of the popular Dronningruta in Øksnes.
Myre to Stø
If you choose to cycle from Myre to Stø, follow FV7672 to the end of the road, 15 kilometers. Easy cycling terrain, the highest points on the route are after 2.5 and 12.5 km are around 35 masl.
Skipnes og Tinden
Skipnes and Tinden offer you visits to roadless communities. An experience in itself.
There is a public express boat from Myre to Skipnes, Tinden and several other small ports of call in the beautiful archipelago of Øksnes Vestbygd.
Well, you cannot cycle between Skipnes and Tinden, but you can take your bicycle on board.
Skipnes and Tinden are on the same island in Øksnes, Tindsøya, but there is no road between them. However, you will find a nice walking path between the two fishing villages.
You can e.g. spend the night in Fiskeværet Skipnes and walk to visit the popular Tinden Gamle Handelssted in spectacular surroundings.
You can also choose to just take a round trip with the boat from Myre and just experience the old fishing villages from the boat.
The 8 cycling rules
- Be visible in traffic
- Give clear signs

- Listen to the traffic, not the music
- Wait for the green light (perhaps not in "Fem Fiskevær"... ;) )
- Give pedestrians first priority on the sidewalk
- Use light in the dark
- Wear a helmet
Visit the rest of Øksnes
You will also find a round trip in Øksnes of 38 kilometres. It does not visit the Five Fiskevær, so if you take this you will get to know other places in Øksnes, e.g. Sørvåg, Alsvåg, Toftenes, Lifjord and Steinlandsfjord with very varied nature.
