For those who love to explore nature on foot, autumn in Vesterålen is an ideal time for hiking in the mountains. We have over 200 marked hiking trails, in mountains and low-land, with fantastic views over the beautiful colorful landscape. You will find hiking routes suitable for all levels.
For example, the popular Dronningruta offers fantastic coastal views, while hiking between the two well-known fishing villages Nyksund and Stø.

Sami Culture and Sculpture Landscape
In Vesterålen, you have the opportunity to experience genuine and local Sami culture. Sit down by the fire in a lavvu (Sami tent), enjoy a taste of Sami food rooted in local traditions and ingredients, while listening to stories about Sami life and joiking. You will also meet a quite large reindeer herd up close and the chance of feeding them by hand.
You will also be able to find a sculpture landscape (artscape) in Vesterålen. A so-called outdoor artworks. In Vesterålen there are five sculptures, of which the most visited is "The Man from the Sea".

Here you can see the northern lights as early as late August. We are located directly below the northern lights oval, and with little light interference. We dare to say that Vesterålen is one of the best places to experience the northern lights.

It is also possible to take part in a guided northern lights safari tour with a local guide, who knows where the best conditions are to see the northern lights with the least possible light pollution.

Whales and Wildlife Safari
Autumn is also the time to experience the whale. The cold and nutrient-rich sea attracts several species of whales, such as killer whales, humpback whales and minke whales, in addition to the sperm whale, which is here all year round.
