The Whale – a Unique Encounter with Whales
Experience whales from a whole new perspective. At The Whale in Andenes, whales, the ocean, art, science and architecture come together in a spectacular knowledge and experience centre.
From June 4, 2027, you can step into the world of whales at The Whale, located at the northern tip of Vesterålen. Discover the fascinating lives of whales – from their biology, communication and behaviour to the long and complex relationship between humans and these magnificent animals.
Through striking architecture, art, sound, storytelling and immersive experiences, The Whale offers new perspectives on whales and the ocean they inhabit. More than a museum, it is an experience designed to spark curiosity, wonder and a deeper connection with life in the ocean.
Meet the Whales in Their Natural World
The Whale is located by the sea in Andenes, one of the world’s premier destinations for year-round whale watching. Just offshore lies Bleiksdjupet, a deep underwater canyon that helps create rich marine ecosystems and attracts whales to the area.
Combine your visit to The Whale with a whale watching safari and experience these magnificent animals from two different perspectives – through knowledge and art, and out on the ocean in their natural environment.
An Architectural Experience
The building itself is an integral part of the experience. Designed by Danish architect Dorte Mandrup, the spectacular structure rises from the coastal landscape as a natural meeting point between land and sea.
Large windows frame the ocean and the landscape of Andøya, while the distinctive architecture creates a unique setting for an encounter with the world of whales. The Whale is made for everyone curious about the ocean – whether you are travelling with family, as a couple, with friends, or simply have a fascination with whales.
The Whale opens to the public on June 4, 2027.
