Vesterålen is a paradise for outdoors activities all year around, but the summer offers endless opportunities for an exciting and unique holiday. Here you will find some ideas for your summer holiday in Vesterålen.
Vesterålen has plenty of white sand beaches which on a hot summer day can make for a relaxing afternoon, barbequing and swimming. Bleik beach in Andøy is one such beach, and Taen beach on the western side of Hadseløya is another. Contact the regional tourist information office in Sortland for more information on beaches.
Hiking and mountain walks
Vesterålen is the world’s most beautiful archipelago for hiking and trekking. The region has shorter, family-friendly routes and more challenging hikes for those who prefer that. Whether you choose to do a daytime walk in Northern Norwegian summer weather, or an evening trek under the midnight sun, you will be left with memories for life. Get hiking inspiration here.
Kayaking in the Archipelago
Are you a kayak veteran, or maybe you would like to try a sea kayak for the first time? Among the Vesterålen islands we have kayaking areas for all levels of experience. Listen to the sound of the waves crashing into the shoreline, explore the famous Trollfjord, go island hopping in a kayak… you name it, you can do it! Read about kayak rentals and courses here.
The weather in Northern Norway can vary and on a rainy day visiting the museums and experience centers in Vesterålen are good options. How about learning about the fishing industry, local heroes or the birthplace of the Hurtigruten? Why not learn about the Northern Lights and go on a journey in space at Spaceship Aurora? Maybe a visit to the center for Aquaculture in Vesterålen strikes your fancy?
In Vesterålen you can get a close encounter with life on land, and in the ocean. To go on a whale safari, a puffin- and eagle safari or a photo safari in the forest, is to get to know the Northern Norwegian nature. On a nature safari you can meet local wildlife, capture the moment on camera and have unforgettable experiences in Arctic nature.
The Vesterålen archipelago is located right by the open sea, and has many areas perfect for daytrips, and longer tours, on bicycle. Starting in Andenes in the north and cycling south to Å in Lofoten is a great coastal route that will let you experience the best of both regions. The National Tourist Route Andøy is also a particularly beautiful cycling trip. Feel free to get in contact with Visit Vesterålen for route suggestions, or read more here.
